Sam Hager Obituary

Sam Ed Hager of Oak Ridge, Tennessee quietly passed on to his heavenly home on Thursday, January 21, 2021.  Mr. Hager fondly know as Sam Ed and Pappy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Johnsie Hager, a son, Samuel E. Hager (wife, deceased Susan Hager), of Beaufort, South Carolina, daughter, Laura Brown of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  Six Grandchildren, Carl Brown and his fiancée Sierra Gamble of Powell, Tennessee, Wesley Scates, and her husband Chris Scates of Crestview Florida, Brenton Brown and his wife Karen Brown of Coal Creek, Pennsylvania.  Jay Bird, who we lost early in his life but never forgotten.  Aaron Hager of Maryville, Tennessee, Jake Hager of Beaufort, South Carolina and AJ Hager also of Beaufort, South Carolina.

Pappy also was blessed to have, if even a short while, 10 Great grandchildren: Masen, Peyton, Madeline, Emerson, Josiah, Ian, Callie, Aliza, and Sam.

Sam is also survived by lifelong friends Roger and Sue Toler of Clinton, Tennessee.

Born in Princeton, W.Va., to parents, Edwin and Envah Hager, Sam was raised in the coal fields of West Virginia, met and married his high school sweetheart and went on to be an Army Veteran, Coal Miner, and Construction manager.  Skilled hunter, artist and gardener and up until a few years ago, grew the best tomato’s in the area.  He loved to tell stories that were at times quite entertaining.  He spent a good life working hard, raising a family, traveling the world remaining ornery and stubborn until his last breath.

Sam spent his last year under the care of the wonderful staff at Patriot Hills in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with the assistance of Amedisys hospice the past few months.  A special and heartfelt thanks to Tom, and all who made this year good for him and the family.  All your kindness for our Pap this year, and during his final hours are not unnoticed and we all are grateful.

A small private gathering of family and friends is to be held on Sunday, January 24, 2021.

His last wish was to go home… he made it home.  You will be missed Pap.
