Mary English Obituary

Mary A. Crowell (Mac) English passed away on February 25th at 5:40p.m. Born in Cordele, Georgia to the late Chester A. Crowell and Mae Reynolds Crowell. preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William A. English (Bill) and survived by her two sons William D. (Bill) and wife Susan, and Robert C. (Bob) English; by granddaughter Carmen Graf and husband, Karl, great granddaughter Harper Graf, several nieces and nephews, and by her beloved cat Tawny.

Mac graduated from Cordele High School and the University of Tennessee. She and Bill were married in 1945 in Corpus Christi, Texas during the second world war, on Ward Island in the Navy Chapel. They enjoyed many years traveling, golfing, fishing and playing badminton. Mac had a strong sense of community spirit and was always involved in many church and community activities throughout her life. They joined Fountain City United Methodist Church in 1958 and were always active in church activities, the Christian Fellowship Class, and she was a circle chairman several times in the UMW. She was also in a bowling club, the Fontinalis Club, President of the Student Museum Guild, Beaver Brook 9 Hole Ladies Golf, the Study Club, President of Woodland Hills Garden Club and was President of the Turtle Bay Ladies Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she and Bill wintered for 15 years. She was also a member of AAUW there. Mac was a true southern woman with a gentle spirit and steely inner resolve.

She was a talented pianist and could play hymns and show tunes by ear. Whereas most of the family might be able to hum part of a tune after hearing it the first time, Mac could come home and play it complete with the chords. Her music warmed the house throughout our lives. These times spent with her family became the most important part of her life.

The family will receive friends from 3pm to 5pm on March 2nd at Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel in Knoxville, Tennessee.
