Harry Arthur McLeod II, 70, passed away in the early morning of March 23, 2023. Harry was born on September 2, 1952 in Memphis, TN, and during a mischievous childhood earned the nickname Buster. A quiet soul, Harry was a lover of nature, and learned as much about plants and animals–particularly birds–as he could. In service of that passion, he attended the UT School of Veterinary Medicine, where he met his wife, Ruthie. The two opened Dogwood Animal Hospital in South Knoxville in 1988, and ran it until their retirement in 2019. A natural athlete, Harry played college baseball, enjoyed basketball in his middle age (AKA “geezer ball”), and beat his friends at golf until the very end. His life was full of adventure, including punching a Budweiser Clydesdale in the face, tipping off the police about a bank robber, and traveling to see almost all the US National Parks in his RV, Ric Flair. He also had some occasional bad luck, including being drafted a week before the Vietnam war ended, tearing his ACL playing geezer ball, and eventually being diagnosed with a rare and difficult to treat form of cancer. Most importantly, Harry was a loving and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and will be dearly missed by his wife, Ruthie; his daughters, Dorothy and Julianne; his grandson, Arthur; and his siblings, Dale, Eric, and Lynne. In addition to all of the above, he was a devoted reader of the Sentinel’s obituaries, so we hope we’ve done him proud. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Friends of Seven Islands State Birding Park. Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel and Crematory is honored to serve the McLeod family.
