Obituary

Charles Herbert Durham, Jr., age 86, of Knoxville passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021. Charlie was a fun-loving man and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church. He graduated from Fulton High School in 1953 where he was a sprinter on the track team. He graduated from UT in 1957 and was employed by the Oak Ridge Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Energy from 1958 through 1985. After retirement, Charlie worked in fitness equipment sales for 25 years. He also worked as a sports correspondent for the Knoxville News-Sentinel from 1956 to 1986, covering over 300 high school basketball and football games. He particularly enjoyed serving the UT basketball teams as an usher for 65 years. Charlie was a founder of the Knoxville Track Club in 1962 and directed the Vol Track Classic for 27 years. He was inducted into the Fulton High School Wall of Fame, the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, and was recognized by the National Football Foundation for long-time community service of the Anderson County High School football program. Charlie was best known by his long-time friends as “Bull.” His lifetime focus was his family and athletic events. He enjoyed working out at local gyms for many years and was a competitive weightlifter until age 65.  

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Durham, Sr., and Louise Durham.  He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Ann Stuart Durham; sons, Brian Durham and Mike Durham; daughter, Julie Beeler and husband George Beeler; grandson, Sam Beeler; and granddaughter, Maggie Beeler. The family will have a graveside service at Norris Memorial Gardens, US 441 (Norris Freeway), on Tuesday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Don Hanshew officiating.
