Samuel Carter McCamy III (Sign Guestbook)

Samuel Carter McCamy III, age 63, received his final prayer to go home to meet his Maker on July 27, 2018. Born on his dad’s birthday, January 14, 1955, in Knoxville, TN, he was the eldest son of Sam and Angie McCamy, and a brother to Gail McCamy Wedekind and Jeffrey McCamy. He graduated from Bearden High School where he played football and then attended his beloved university, The University of Tennessee, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and received his Bachelors of Science. It was at UT where he met the love of his life and best friend, Susan McConnaughey (Susie), and after seven years of courtship and behavior modification, they were wed and enjoyed thirty-six fun filled years of marriage together.

Samuel is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Angie McCamy. He is survived by his loving wife, Susie, his son George Tyler McCamy (Spike), his daughter Callie McCamy Jubran, her husband Nadim, as well as his beloved granddaughter Mabry. He is also survived by his siblings, Gail (David) Wedekind and Jeff (Pace) McCamy, as well as Susie’s sisters, Betsy (Mark) Owen and Nancy (David) Leggett. He is also survived by his father and mother in-law, George and Carolyn McConnaughey, as well as many loving nieces and nephews who he adored.

His passion for business was evident to all who knew him. His work and impact in the electrical and construction fields were nothing short of admirable. He remained a lifelong entrepreneur, investor, dreamer and visionary through his last days. With a love for family, friends, travel, food and health trends, and more, Sam had an incredible zest for life that was contagious. His larger than life personality, fun-loving spirit, love for entertaining others and making them laugh, quick wit and unique charm, along with his perseverance, dignity and strength were unmatched here on earth and no doubt all welcomed additions to the gates of Heaven. Just over two years after receiving a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, Sam fought harder and longer than anyone could have imagined. With his bucket list a mile long, he lived out his days full of love and laughter.

Sam had an incredibly generous heart and loved to give – he gave his blessings, advice, time, friendship and love to so many. He had a passion for helping others and especially mentoring young people in business and in their faith. Sam had the special gift of making every person he knew or met know just how important they were – his family, friends, business partners, along with every doctor, nurse, or other health care worker that helped him along this difficult journey. With quality time being his love language, he cherished every person in his life and reminded us of that constantly.

Sam’s suffering – through the cancer that took so much from him – became his sermon, impacting lives far beyond what he knew with his undeniable strength and endurance, as well as his unbelievable faith and unwavering relationship with the Lord. He kept his eyes on God and his hope for the miracle of healing throughout his excruciating fight. A scripture he held close to him was “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Matthew 21:22). We believe he received many miracles throughout his life but has now received his biggest miracle, which was ultimate healing in heaven. He will be missed here on earth so deeply, but we find peace knowing he is exactly where he wants to be and has finally been made whole again with his Creator.

A celebration of life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1610 Midpark Rd., Knoxville, TN, 37921, off Middlebrook) on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00-1:45 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to UT Cancer Integrative Medicine (2121 Medical Center Way Suite 110 Knoxville, TN, 37920), a mission Sam felt very passionate about. Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the McCamy family and invites you to view and sign the online registry below.

  40. Jim Miller says:

Here is what made Sam special to me…
I’ve spent nearly two decades around electrical-products distribution business owners/operators. Many of them (in an extremely competitive field) either wanted to be more like Roden Electric or competed with Roden Electric. Yet I never heard any of these people utter even a single word of jealousy or resentment in all those years. And in all those years, 100% of both peers & competitors alike, when I mentioned Sam McCamy, would first smile … and then say “great guy.”
That is incredible … and inspiring.
I am grateful for the brief time I was fortunate enough to spend around Sam, and am very sorry for your loss. He was a truly special person.

I am so sad to hear the passing of Samuel McCamy, in the short time that I knew Mr. McCamy is was immediately taken in by his beautiful charm, personality, demeanor and out look on life. I told him and Susie that I loved them as family and I knew this the first day I met them and I let them both know that I would be here for him and do everything I can. He was a very caring, sweet, funny and the nicest person that I am honored and blessed to meet and have in my life. He inspired me in every way and I knew then he was my hero, he left a big impression in my life and I will never forget how he impacted me and for this I am truly thankful. Although I was in his life for a short period of time, he still managed to make me feel as part of his family. To the McCamy Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Losing a loved one is always so hard on those of us left behind. We say they’ve gone to a better place, even though we still wish they were still here with us. It hurts now, but with the love you share with one another you’ll make it through.

Sam and I met at Bearden Elementary School in 1964, he was one the first people to befriend me. All the way through school, playing football, he was always same. We took separate paths after High School, occasionally bumping into one another, he was the same. I will sorely miss him. To you his family all my love.

  60. Anne Colquitt says:

Dear Susie, it’s Anne Colquitt; I am sad that I will not be able to attend the celebration of life your family will be sharing with those that loved Sam and his family. I am out of town helping Brittons wife with their 4 children while he is not able to be at home at all during football training camp. Sam is very special to me and I’m not surprised by Callie’s tremendous descriptive documentation of Sam’s courage and strength to do all that he could to stay as long as possible in the midst of those he loved here on this earth. I know he got very close to the foot of the cross and each step God used Sam’s life to point others to our God and Messiah who seeks after each one of us who will chose Him to follow. With that comes the promises that our Savior makes ; that He will never leave us and that He has in fact, prepared a place for us to spend eternity forever with Him … I think God brings each one of us at some point in our lives, a longing to just be with Him… and at His appointed time … He brings us home. So I have been celebrating for Sam & praying for your peace as I know full well the huge adjustment this will require of each one of you… But I know you’ll come back to the thought that Sam is now present with our Lord, our ultimate destination and we do have the promise of seeing & being with Sam again. He sure holds a special place in my heart. I have been, and will continue to lift you up to our Savior and pray that God will use Sam’s life to bring to ALL the glory to Him as this is God’s intention for each of His believers. Love to Susie, Spike, Callie & Gail and each of your extended family. I will be in touch, in the not so distant future. Love, Anne Colquitt

  61. John Edward Dean-Morton says:
