Lawrence Whicker (Sign Guestbook)

Dr. Lawrence Whicker was a 1953 graduate of East High School. He attended the University of Tennessee where he acquired a BS degree in 1957 and MS in 1958.  He received his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1964.

 His impressive career which included teaching and industrial experience was far-reaching and made extensive technological discoveries.  He published over 100 technical papers on microwave components and solid state devices, two books on ferrite control components and three invited book chapters.

 Larry was a leader in his field and held multiple positions including Senior Engineer at Sperry Microwave Electronics Company, Ford Foundation Fellow at Purdue University, Manager of Physics at Westinghouse Defense, and Head of the Microwave Technology Branch at the Naval Research Laboratory.  He represented the United States Government on international and technical matters. In addition, he managed the Gallium-Arsenide Program at Westinghouse Defense. He served as a technical consultant and administrator to the IEEE-MTT-S technical committees.

 His technical work made significant contributions to the development of active and passive phased-array radar systems.  These radars continue in use in all branches of the military and underpin many vital radar systems such as those utilized on AWACS, B1 Bomber, AEGIS radar systems on Navy ships, as well as the F-22 fighters.

 He received notable recognition being awarded Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, Ford Foundation Fellowship, IEEE Young Engineer Award, IEEE Fellow, IEEE Centennial Medal and Aviation Week Laurels Award, and Life Fellow in IEEE.

 Larry is survived by Margaret, his beloved wife of 60 years.  He is also survived by two sons, four grandchildren and pre-deceased by a granddaughter.  He was a member of the UT Alumni Association, Purdue University Alumni Association and Past President of the Wroxeter School Patrons Club. He served as a  board member of the Pasadena United Methodist Church in Severna Park , MD. 

 There will be a memorial service at the Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 30 at 9:30am, followed by a burial at the Greenwood Cemetery, Fountain City, Tennessee.  The family has asked that those wishing to honor Lawrence’s memory may make a donation to the IEEE Foundation in his name online or by sending a check to IEEE Foundation, 445 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08854. Donations in Lawrence’s memory will support the IEEE Life Members Graduate Study Fellowship in Electrical Engineering.
